An IFS officer from 1987-batch of Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Kamboj had been serving as India’s envoy to Bhutan. Kamboj was the all-India topper of the 1987 batch, the civil services batch, and also the topper of the Foreign Service batch of that year.

She comes after T S Tirumurti as the Indian ambassador to the United Nations (UN). Kamboj is also the country’s first woman envoy to be serving at United Nations headquarters in New York.
The senior diplomat Ruchira Kamboj recently took charge as India’s new permanent representative to the United Nations and presented her credentials to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
She said it was a great honor and privilege to be the first Indian woman to be given the honor to hold this great position. Additionally, she also said to all the girls that, we all can make it.
That is how Kamboj started her journey:
- Well, Kamboj started her journey from where she was posted in the Indian Embassy means Paris to France from 1989-1991.
- She later returned to Delhi where she worked as an undersecretary in the Europe West Division of the ministry of external affairs from 1991–96.
- And then, after that from 1996 to 1999, she worked in Mauritius as First Secretary (Economic and Commercial) and Head of Chancery at the Indian High Commission in Port Louis.
- Kamboj has also served as the high commissioner of India to South Africa, with the same delegation to the Kingdom of Lesotho from July 2017 to March 2019.
Coming after 21 Indian representatives at the UN, Kamboj is the first woman to be the permanent representative, and Jawaharlal Nehru’s sister Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit had been designated the chief delegate to the General Assembly twice.
